How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread-Khaosinc 3/5/71-8/30/11

I also went over all the edges of the tank with weld on 3 to reseal them, then went over them wit weld on 16. I also discovered that if you put weld 3 over weld 16 it works great to get the bubbles out.

Also resealed the inside patches from the closed loop for a little extra protection.

Ran out of 16, think more should be here tommorow so I gave up for the night and came in to check forums/email and figure out where the heck I'm supposed to be going tommorow for some new stupid doctor thing. Yea... more specialists.

with any luck I'll finish gluing tommorow night then we are going to put the MR clean magic eraser to the test. I'm gonna drag a water hose out there and rig one in to a palm sander and go to town on the tank and see what it gets out. Let everything cure for a week or so when we get to leak test it.... fun fun fun

you should be fine to fill the tank now, weldon doesnt need very long to cure, it gasses out pretty fast, i would fill it 20 minutes after youre done lol, your going to sand and polish the whole tank? Thats alot of work, you must be feeling better because youve accomplished quite a bit in the last few days/weeks.

Also are you anywhere near seattle? Im going to seattle in two weeks with my fiance to see her friend/maid of honor

I'm feeling fine. There was a couple spots I wanted to finish covering w/ weld on 16 and I did that today. I'm doing ok as far as feeling ok, as long as I don't do anything involving standing for more than 15 mins or so or overdo it trying to lift something I shouldn't. Having no sternum sucks. I'm going to see how polishing goes. Make more decisions once I see the tank full. I have about every power tool known to man at my disposal so I don't think it will be to bad.

I'm about 80 miles north of Seattle out in the middle of nowhere. If you want to see the other half of WA that isn't city its worth the drive. I'm usually around. Feel free to drop me a line.

On the lighter side, I did finish glueing up the tank, leak test is tommorow and I'll most likely let it sit until next weekend when I can get a couple of people to help me move everything in to the fish room so I can plumb it in and officially start the planted mangrove swamp.

I did get a few hundered pounds more sand out. Made a lovely mess of everything. I don't think my corals have been happier than the last couple of weeks.

tossed about 10 gallons of sand (well my GF did) in the sump as well...

019-1.jpg

and put about 100 pounds of marco rock in the DT that is going to replace the sand bed. From what I saw of it before I resumed tearing up the sand bed, I'm going to like it.

Got to do a leak test on the rebuilt tank today...

must have done something right.

I really hate bulkheads. I think I'm going to patch the return line ones as well.
005-5.jpg

Found another little 'surprise' Didn't realize there was swiss cheese under the black panal as well. More patching. I should be down right good at this by the end of it.

002-7.jpg

back to the main tank.

Kinda get an idea of what the rock bed will look like. sure is white. Lots of extra rock is just sort of piled up out of the way as well still not sure where it is all going.

012-4.jpg

I really should get a move on, my temp. frag rack is getting full...

broke the bulkhead hose fitting off while draining it. I can't find bulkheads within about 50 miles of here. going to give up and order some tonight.

006-5.jpg

random zoa shot..

015-2.jpg

FTS... might move some more rock around if I feel up to it later. kinda wiped from yesterday still. I have got to do something about that return line, been annoying me for a year now

Kev
I think this tank has given you therapy for getting your health somewhat better. Hopefully its working.

patched up the 2 return lines so I don't have to deal with bulkheads there either. I'll just run a line over the top of the tank. Got the neibor kids to move some stuff around so I can get a look at the other tank I ended up with. Why why why to people insist on siliconing the heck out of acrylic tanks. it doesn't work and its a PITA to get back off... Anyone know where I put my hole saw kit? I can't find it anywhere.

Cut all the bulkheads off and started cleaning up a bit. I do like how he built the custom overflow. left it to soak with vinager sprayed on all the build up. going to see if I can get acrylic rounds tommorow and see if I can do a much nicer patch up job on this one. I HATE CLOSED LOOPS AND BULKHEADS. assuming I don't run out, I'm also going to see what happens if I use weld on 16 around them rather than a gasket. fuse the whole mess solid.

also need to scrounge up a stand for the second tank. To bad I got rid of all my scrap steel... LOL Suppose I'll have to resort to wood.

18 years i drove a semi. Now with 6 hernited disk and 2 more bulging and degenerative disk disease in over 80% of my back. I get to sit at home. Doing this has really kicked in my PTSD and severe depression. I stay bored about 99% of the time.
Only so many cheetos and pornos a man can watch :) LMAO. so i know how you feel about the sane part.

I've spent most of my life working jobs that were 60+ hour a week types. If they were not, then I usually had 2. Just the way I've always been. Was always kinda jealous of the people that got to sit around and not work. Now, I don't know how they do it. 1 month of Jerry springer and I was ready to gouge my eyes out with a fork. If I thought there was anything out there I could do at the moment, I would almost be offering to work for free.

On the lighter side I got about 50 more pounds of rock in the tank. going to leave the last bit of sand for the wrasse and the gobys. Found the coolest randon thing. Something I've disturbed in the sandbed is growing some algea that glows hot pink under the moon lights. Camera didn't capture it well. Hope it dosen't stick around to long, but it is amusing.

After that, I wandered in to the back yard to enjoy the evening... got a little bored and 'pruned' my blackberrys back a bit. Pushing 10' plus tall in some parts. I miss having goats.

nothing like doing a nice burn in the night lol. I know what you mean on working alot and now not working, ive always worked long hours booming at out of town jobs, last job was 7-13hr days wk working at a poer plant that was being built for 3 years, after that layoff and the economy crash ive been off work for almost 2 years now, no work here anywhere, im to the point of breakdown, ive resorted to work some rat jobs, i will take anything, still nothing after about 100 applications , posted adds on craigslist etc.....working for my friends small construction company building decks right now for about 20-30hrs a week..... i think i remember saying that you are a millwright?

'67 Chrysler Imperial, 66 Dodge van, and a '65 dodge Polara (turns low 12's) The dart is in the front of the house.

I was a millwright, Before that I was a refinery rat. Wandered aimlessly around the contry before that. but I don't forsee going back in to that line of work. Apart from my legs, I really can't do much pulling.pushing. and my hands have been shot for years. Can't really get in to wrench on the cars either which is annoying because I finally have the time

Most the sand bed is gone. I think once it gets some coraline going and I infest it with muchrooms/ricordias and various toadstools and the occational anthillia and xenia forest I think it will look pretty good. Going to take a while to get used to it.

the last of the sand it waiting until I have a new tank finished. waiting on bulkheads and starting on building the stand today. Didn't notice the 240 was a 99" long tank and the stand I was planning on using won't work.

besides I don't want to move my 'old west' frag rack at the moment. I'm sure I'm going to be moving a rock here and there for a month until I'm happy with it. the big flat rock is waiting until I'm motivated to glue all my zoa frags on to it then I'll find a place for it.

obligitory FTS

everything is a little washed out. Another one of those weird days with sun.

wow thats crazy how fast your getting growth on that rock, my marco rock still has 0 groth on it after 8 weeks.... did you have it in your sump or something before you put it in the tank? I really like the rock substrate, nice idea that might be implemented into a ne tank in the future

its been in the tank about a week straight out if the box. Theres a bit of excess yuck in my system at the moment from pulling hundreds of pounds of deep sand bed out. I suspect it will be purple by fall.
