How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread-Khaosinc 3/5/71-8/30/11

that 65 dodge polara's headlights look alot like a 64 impala, pretty cool, my old neighbor had a 65 polara police car.

I love that old car. Hasn't seen the street in way to long, and they won't let me take it to the track anymore. Some annoying thing about safety. It looks stock at 5 feet other than being a little loud but doesn't really like pump gas. It really likes about 104 octane. Looks like a 383 under the hood, but is actually a 451 stroker.

So I still run drum brakes and the car has never had seatbelt.... It usually stops by the last turnout.

the '64 is quite a bit shorter and only has single headlights. Its a B body, whereas the '65 is the first of the 'c' bodys. and about 1000 pounds heavier.

Bah, theres no fancy accordian frame, I'll go through anything I hit.

They need to invent a welder for wood. I may have worked in a saw mill for years, but I like adjustments with a sledge hammer and a cutting torch. Wood always seems so flimsy to me. I need to make this pile of overglorified kindling in to a stand I trust to hold up 240 gallons...

i hear you on the wood, i hate wood...... ive been welding for years and hate even the thought of cutting some wood unless its with a chainsaw.....that stand you built for the 750 could hold up a tank i think :)

I figure if you overbuild by a factor of 10, you should be pretty close to good. Working in mills, you kinda have to assume everything will be abused and hit with a forklift and that is on a good day. I figure the stand should be good for 60K pounds. I keep looking at the fiasco I'm creating and it just looks flimsy still.... 1 match... all gone.

have you ever had to deal with those giant iron balls in pulvarizers? lol this question probably sounds wierd to otheres...oh well, i was carrying one on a 20,000lb forklift and the main boom pin broke and dropped the ball and rolled through the side of the boiler buildings wall.... what a mess that was......

well its part way done. My drill batteries are dead, and my chest and legs are killing me. Most likely should not of been doing that. Welding is so much nicer.

I'm short 2 boards on the one corner and the bottom needs its braces, then the whole think will be skinned in 3/4" plywood and lag bolted together. Rough math in my head puts its load strength (in a perfect world) at around 15 tons before the plywood... Should be ok for a 240 (actually I think its closer to 260) gallon tank. Will be primed and painted as well of course.

Most of what I worked on in the quarrys and in the mills had been hammer mills. Not nearly as heavy but break a shaft on one it sure dies make a heck of a mess.

Yeah once i was in the pulvarizer bay and all 6 pulvarizers have an airbag to seal them, well the seal air fans got tripped and allowed the coal dust to blow out of the sides of the pulvarizers when i was in there.....how scary that was...... and aother time when i was on the top elevation in the boiler building when they lost air pressure to control there valves and the pressure in the boiler got to high and tripped the emergency vents......at 4000psi+ i almost lost me hearing, and good thing i was on the elevator on the way down or i would have been cooked like a lobster...... i dont miss working in any kind of industrial plant..........

and on your stand, that will definately hold up that tank, thats basically the same design i have holding up my 120, only half the size. You must be a soldier to be doing all of this stuff after going through what you have......

I don't know about soldier, more of stubbern and bored stupid. I take breaks every 15 mins or so or my legs give out. My hands arn't much better.

On the lighter side, as soon as the batteries recharge (again) It gets a few final screws and lag bolted. If I'm still moving it will get a primer/sealer tonight.

access in the front. I need to see how it fits with stand #3 before I worry about it tape measure says I have 1" to spare between the front of this stand and the stand for the 300... Tape measures have been known to lie.

Wooo hoo, the Eel finally ate. Been offering him shrimp/clams every couple of days. I even can see him occationally.

Hopefully when this project is done, I can get the other 300 up and give him a proper home..

dude, everyday its something new.. dont get me wrong i come here to see what your up to but please slow down.. im a freaking carpenter and i would still take a couple of days to build that myself and im in great shape.. your a stubborn mule aint ya.. oh well continue on, after all this is called How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread .. my wife just doesnt understand why you need more tanks.. please break down the whole system so she can understand your madness.

LOL... I need these tanks to actually get to the 1500 gallon mark... I'm only pushing about 1150 now. Besides I really don't have much else to do.

As for my secret in getting stuff done... A bucked with wheels mounted on it and air tools. and a chain fall to a beam outside the sliding glass door as I can't lift the pig.

Its mostly black, I ran out of primer so the inside can wait, or I can use the weird light purple stuff in my shop thats been sitting there a couple of years... 1 of the two. This stand cost virtually nothing to build as the plywood was scrap, and well, I did work at a sawmill for several years. I also hoard to much junk, I have bolts and screws coming out of my ears in the shop. All three dogs get white priimer on them, hopefully they will manage to get black on them in the same areas...LOL

on a sadder note my lepord wrasse appears to be on its last legs. no idea why. I was actually motivated to do some water testing and everything is close to normal. At least concidering I've been ripping sand bed apart for weeks. No idea how old it is, might just be his time. it was second hand to me and survived a couple of tanks with me. This is the fish who somehow got in to the new tank before it even cycled last year.

The actual breakdown of the system isn't particulary planned out, I just sort of wing it as I go along. The intention is to create as close to a complete ecosystem as one can in one room to mimic the ocean. One of these days I might even rig up tides. I do have a plan for that......

The new tank I'm building the stand for is for a mangrove swamp/planted tank This is natures natural way of breaking down waste. I consider the skimmer the action of the waves and wind (foamy yuck on the beach and oxegon) The main tank is the reef and well, the most fun to watch. The 300 gallon sump is the cryptic zone for all the neat little critters and sponges that do whatever it is they do down there in the dark. There are lots of neat things growing there so something must like it. and the other 300 is most likely be a predator/nem tank and have a nice place for my frag racks. I have a snowflake Eel in the sump that will move in there, and I'd like the kind of 'nem that most people can't have in a full blown reef, and most likely throw in a few various unwanted fish as they come up. I also really want a clown trigger...

as for tides/open water. I do have a hair brained idea for that, but thats a few projects down the list.

I think that about sums up my madness so far...

Relatively new to the hobby and I recently found this site and your thread. I started reading it from the beginning, but a lot of the pictures are no longer available. I was wondering if you had a youtube channel with any old video so I could see the process from the beginning. Thanks for all the posts. It has been an interesting read so far.
