Mixed 500 gal. A.G.E. build. 12 unit LED Radion lights.

I have taken my lights way up. 100% with all colors for 6 hours. Lights have been running on this schedule for a few months. I have had great growth and color with my Acros.
My acros have grown a whole lot in 5 months.
I am going to start backing my time down to around 4 hours a day and after that i am going to get my high intensity down to about 75%.
The reason behind this light change is i want a mixed reef. Right now i have to keep all my Chalice's and other LPS corals tucked back in the shade and I can't really enjoy them.
I really think these lights will do both give my SPS growth and color and not bleach my LPS
I have all ready seen fantastic color and growth with my Acros
I will take a month to get my lights turned down.
Later this week I will post a few pics of my tank.

Is it possible to pick just a few lights to turn down........spot lighting so to speak. You could have a few of your units down for LPS and those over the majority of SPS can stay at 100%? I doubt you would be able to see the difference visually. Just a thought.

Yes that is possible if my SPS were all in one area.
I have 12 Radions over a 109x40x27 lights are 8" above water.
So I have plenty of light when lights are set to 100%.
I want to find a happy balance.
The reason I did turn the lights up to 100% was so I could see what these lights were capable of doing.

I experienced the same thing David when it came to keeping acans, the light is just to strong. I may have to set up another LPS / zoas tank.

It's very difficult to balanced a real mixed reef tank
My softies hasn't grown in 4 years some even recede some died a horrible death beause the water is too clean ,lights are too strong and flow is too strong.

Have you tried growing SPS at the bottom of your tank 27" down? Curious how the growth / color will be that far from the radions.

Do you notice coralline on the glass much? I heard LEDs produce less algea and thus less work to clean the glass.

With 3"-4" sand bed Im at 24" deep. I havent tried to grow any SPS on bottom.
I have tried to grow mushrooms, torches and chalaces. I cant to much light

Come to think about it no I dont see much coraline on glass

Just want to confirm are the mushrooms torches and chalaces dying from the too much light or just not growing because of the intensity your currently putting out?

Radions

Radions

I am very anxious to get my 12 Radions up and running. I was a little concerned about my depth being 48", but I should be okay.

Did you read about the new lens covers for the Radion units?

Is this a reef tank and how far down do you plan to keep coral? With or without the lenses I think that's a lot of depth for these fixtures. From the reviews and what I've found the radion is an amazing fixture for depths of Davids tank and shallower. Finding happy radion owners with 30 inch tanks I struggled to find and that's why I have given up on that dream for now. Hopefully the lenses help or something at MACNA presents itself from Ecotech on that side of things.

Can't wait for MACNA! Really hope some manufacturers start focusing on r&d rather than marketing a rainbow of LEDs in every fixture as I don't see the point in the various colors as the coral is not going to benefit. You play too much with colors and shifting the spectrum and the corals will not be happy....

What are the Dimension of your new tank going to be? My tank is too small for 12 Radions. But 6" wide for 6 Radions

Good point on the R@D. I'm not sure what benefit Corals will get from the rainbow.

See you in Dallas

I agree that the corals really don't benefit from the rainbow of colors and I think we can agree that AI has proven that. I think we have seen plenty of AI lit tanks that have had tremendous coral growth. But what we also saw in those tanks were fish that were missing something with their color. Their colors were less vibrant and had no pop. Plus IMO they had a "neon" look to them which is from all of the Royal Blue color. I know many guys that added t5's to their AI's and the look shifted completely and the fish gained that missing pop. Dustin hit the nail on the head about the spectrum and if these lights don't get it right it could definitely cause a lot of problems in the tank. I know when I was looking for my leds all I cared about was wether or not it will grow corals and look good. I don't care about thunder and lightening storms or cloudy days and moon simulation has no appeal to me either. I just want something that gives the tank a natural look and grows coral. Now my light is a hybrid LED/T5 and it looks amazing whether just leds are on or both led/t5's. The technology has come a long way....but has a long way to go.

96"x42"x48". I am just filling with water today. I am waiting on the hanging kits from EcoTech and for my rack to be built. I have more about my build on my thread, a "Reef Tank in the Desert."
