How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread-Khaosinc 3/5/71-8/30/11

Judging by the pic you posted I see a set of unions on the inlet and outlet sides of the pump that should make removal of the pump fairly easy and then the impeller end fitting just twists off. On my Euroreef pumps the impeller magnets periodically get a crack in the plastic covering causing them to swell and lock up in the pump. The only way I found to get them out is to break off the needle wheel end and run a drill through the middle of the magnet removing most of the material. Then I use a pair of needle nose pliers to get the remaing magnet part and the plastic covering out. I've had to do this to 2pumps in the last 2 years. Impellers are alot cheaper than the whole pump if this it actually what froze your pumps. But like you said, I guess it all depends on hard it is to take your skimmer offline to take a quick look at the internals. I hope you get it figured out when you're feeling up to it.

mostly its an issue of being up to it. I have some good days and more bad. to get that skimmer offline and drained is going to be a bit of a pain and depending on what parts I need offline for a while while I get new parts. not much available locally. Hence the idea of just getting one complete one so I can take apart one and fix it at my leasure, then use that one to replace the other. Its all time and money in this hobby. Unfortunetly, I'm lacking on one, and overflowing on the other.

If you were to do it over you would put some unions or a bypass system in so you can easily take the skimmer off line?
K, you should come up with a lessons learned for this build I’m sure it would be a hoot

The impeller on my pump had crapped out in the same way (plastic cracking) it was simple enough to remove the plastic, my only worry now is the exposed magnet,
however iv seen impellers with exposed magnets so i dont think it will be too bad, but i guess a new impeller could have solved it just as well though

hopfully you wont have to replace both pumps entirely

I think the title says it all. How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread LMAO

Most important part is your health K, we can replace materialistic things but we can’t replace you…
Do what you can and don’t push yourself I’m looking fwd to the made for TV version.

Jeff has to much hair and Woody is to little how about Paul Teutul at lest he has tatoos

Better say somthihg about aquariums so the self appointed reef central police dont chime in again
K way back in this thread you said you blew a seam in your tank that is how this all started remember
how do you plan to fix it? I want to fix my 140 glass but dont really want to take it completly apart. It has a euro type band of glass siliconed around the top that I plan to redo and I am thinking of doing the same around the bottom just clean the glass and silicone 2" or 3" strips on top of the bottom glass and to the sides
What do you think

I sold the tank, as I deceided I wouldn't trust it again. I don't forsee having another large glass tank.

I did however have a bit of motivation today, and finally rearranged the sump like I had planned. You'll have to excuse some of the pics, as I'm way to lazy to take on the coraline in there.

I will also be finding out how cat sharks do in a reef setting.

the little tomato clown wasn't so impressed, the maroon promptly shoed them off

my cryptic zone uncovered briefly... all sorts of odd colored sponges, and what appears to be a chili coral start (only predatory coral in my system) coudn't get a decent pic though

all the LR up off the bottom of the tank for better flow and to not trap yuck in there.

contained the cheato and some red macro that seems to love my tank so it can stop clogging my powerheads threw a mess of it out as well. the 'bin is about 12" by 22" so I could get it in there. Hopefully it will also act as kind of a prefilter before the return section

lots more of the red stuff if it doesn't like the extra light and flow..

even cleaned out the goo from the return section.... there are hundreds of feather dusters coating the heaters. Must not kick on very often

still exploring the tank... haven't bothered anyone yet.

also scored a cheap eheim 1262 on ebag, and ordered a rebuild kit, so hopefully my skimmer will be up and running soon. Also hope the mag float pads show up, I can't see in the tank again, and I've worn mine down to nothing.

next time I have some spare cash I'm going to get several of the not very reef safe scavengers and put them in the sump as well. The lawnmower goby is still in there, but I gave up trying to catch him

K, get some Doobie cleaning sponges from the grocery store. Cut the end out of it and remove the sponge and use that on your mag float for cleaning. I use that on my Great White and it gets every thing off the acrylic.

I have some pads en route (at least in theory)... pads for the 510 are a pain to find for some reason. I may have to look in to the sponges. Are you using them on acrylic
